You probably own both kinds. The wool rug in the living room. The synthetic runner in the hallway. They all need cleaning. But not the same cleaning.

Treating a wool rug like a synthetic is one of the fastest ways to ruin something valuable. At Carpet Cleaning Group, our family-owned team has handled professional rug cleaning in Chicago since 2014. The question we get most: “Can you steam clean my wool rug like my carpet?” The honest answer is no. Here’s why.

How to Tell What You Have

A few quick checks:

Touch test: Wool feels slightly warm and springy. Synthetic feels cooler, smoother, and stiffer.

Backing check: Flip the rug over. A hand-knotted wool rug shows the pattern through the back, with visible knots. Machine-made synthetic rugs have a uniform glued or latex backing.

Fiber test: Burn one loose fiber over a sink. Wool smells like burnt hair and crumbles into soft ash. Synthetic melts into a hard bead.

If you’re still not sure, we’ll identify it during the free inspection.

Why Wool Reacts Differently

Wool has natural oils called lanolin. That coating makes wool rugs feel rich, repel light spills, and last for generations. It’s also what makes wool finicky to clean.

A few things that damage wool:

Hot water. High temperatures shrink wool and cause natural dyes to migrate. That deep red border on your Persian rug can bleed into the cream center if the water is too hot.

Alkaline cleaners. Most household carpet shampoos have a high pH. That chemistry strips lanolin and weakens the fiber. Wool needs a pH-neutral, wool-safe solution instead.

Over-wetting. Wool holds water. If a rug stays wet too long, moisture wicks through to the backing and causes browning. Hard to reverse.

Hard agitation. Aggressive scrubbing can felt the surface. Felting is permanent matting. There’s no fix.

That’s why our oriental rug cleaning service handles wool, silk, and hand-knotted pieces off-site at our facility.

Why Synthetics Are More Forgiving

Polypropylene, nylon, polyester, and olefin make up most modern rugs. These fibers handle a much wider range of conditions:

They tolerate hot water without shrinking. They don’t absorb water the way wool does, so they dry faster. They handle standard cleaners that would damage wool. Their dyes are usually fast and don’t bleed.

Most synthetic area rugs can be cleaned right in your home using hot water extraction. The rug sits on a protective barrier so moisture doesn’t soak through to the floor. Dry time is usually four to eight hours. For larger or more delicate pieces, in-plant area rug cleaning at our Chicago facility is the safer call.

The trade-off: synthetics don’t have wool’s built-in soil resistance. They show wear faster in hallways and entryways.

Cleaning Mistakes That Wreck Wool Rugs

A few patterns we see:

Rental carpet machines. The detergent that comes with rental units is alkaline. It strips lanolin and may felt the surface. We’ve seen rugs come out flat, dull, and matted after one session.

Hot water on stains. Heat sets protein stains like blood, egg, and pet accidents. Cold water and gentle blotting are safer.

Hydrogen peroxide on dyes. Peroxide bleaches natural wool dyes. The result is a pale patch that won’t go away.

Letting the rug sit damp. After wet cleaning, wool needs to dry flat in a controlled space. A damp rug on a cool floor will brown within a day or two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer free pickup and delivery for rugs in Chicago?

Yes, free pickup and delivery throughout Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Call (773) 570-4224 to schedule a time that works for you.

Can you clean a wool rug in my home?

Wool rugs almost always need off-site cleaning at our facility. The water temperature, chemistry, and flat drying setup aren’t replicable in a home. We pick it up, clean it, and deliver it back.

How long does wool rug cleaning take?

Five to ten business days from pickup to delivery. The process includes colorfast testing, hand washing, and flat drying. We give you a specific timeline at pickup.

Will hot water extraction damage my synthetic area rug?

No, not for typical polypropylene, nylon, or polyester rugs. Hot water extraction is the recommended method for most synthetics. We inspect and test before we start.

Do you work on antique or family heirloom rugs?

Yes. Many of the rugs we clean are inherited pieces. We test for dye stability, document any pre-existing damage, and adjust our approach to the condition of the rug.
