When a pet urinates on carpet, very little of it stays in the fiber. Gravity takes the rest into the backing, then the padding underneath, and on a bad accident into the subfloor.
As it dries it leaves crystals behind. Those crystals sit dormant until humidity reaches them, and then the smell returns. This is why a room can be fine in February and unbearable in July, and why a surface clean buys you weeks rather than years.
Any carpet cleaning that only treats the top of the pile is treating maybe a fifth of the problem.

Our pet treatment is a sanitizer applied along with a full hot water extraction cleaning. Solution goes down into the pile under pressure, breaks the deposit loose, and gets pulled back out with the extraction vacuum rather than left behind to dry.
It costs $30 per room on top of the cleaning. On a hallway it is $15, on a walk-in closet $10, and on a basement $90.
For rugs, pet treatment runs $1.00 per square foot and the rug comes back to our plant. Pickup and delivery is free.

If that is what you have, we will say so rather than take the money and hand you back the same room. That conversation costs us a job now and then. We would rather have it.
Accidents that were cleaned up reasonably soon. Repeat spots in one area from an older pet or a puppy still learning. Odor that is noticeable but not constant.
Long-standing spots where urine reached the padding. We can improve these and often we resolve them, but the padding is the variable and we cannot see it until we are working.
Urine that has soaked into the subfloor over months or years. At that point the padding has to be replaced and sometimes the carpet with it. No cleaning reaches wood underneath carpet and pad.
Do not use a store-bought spot cleaner in the days before your appointment if you can avoid it. Many leave a residue that has to come out before the actual treatment can work, which is extra time on your bill.
Blotting a fresh accident with a clean towel is always fine. Pressing down and lifting straight up removes more than scrubbing, and scrubbing pushes the deposit deeper into the pad.
Point out every spot when we get there, including old ones you think are handled. A spot you have stopped smelling is often the one still active.

Cat urine is more concentrated, so a smaller accident produces a stronger smell and needs more work per square inch.
Dogs cover more ground. With a large dog you are often dealing with volume that reached the pad on the first accident rather than after twenty.
Both respond to the same treatment. The difference is how much of it a room needs.

Carpet is normally dry in four to six hours. Keep pets off it until it is fully dry, mostly so they do not track through and re-soil what you just paid for.
