When Should You Deep Clean Your Carpets? A Chicago Homeowner’s Guide

Here’s something we tell almost every new customer: your vacuum is doing less than you think.

Don’t get us wrong — vacuuming matters. You should do it. But if you live in Chicago, your carpets are dealing with things a vacuum can’t fix. Road salt from November to March. Mud season after that. Lake-effect humidity all summer long. That stuff doesn’t sit on top of the carpet. It works its way down into the fibers and the padding underneath.

So how do you know when to deep clean your carpets? That’s what this guide is about.

How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Carpets?

The short answer: it depends on your household. The Carpet and Rug Institute’s recommendations say every 12 to 18 months for most people. But most people don’t live in Chicago, and most people don’t have a golden retriever that loves puddles.

Here’s how we’d break it down:

Live alone, no pets, low traffic? Every 12 to 18 months is fine.

Kids in the house? Bump it up to every 6 to 12 months. Between the juice boxes, the muddy shoes, and the daily wear and tear — carpets take a hit.

Pets? Every 3 to 6 months. Especially if they go outside. And if you’re dealing with accidents, sooner is always better than later.

Allergies or asthma in the family? Every 3 to 6 months. Carpets trap pollen, dust mites, and dander. Cleaning more often actually helps.

One more thing people don’t always know: a lot of carpet warranties require professional cleaning on a schedule. Skip it and you could void your coverage. When you’re ready, our professional steam cleaning is the method most manufacturers recommend.

Signs Your Carpets Need a Deep Cleaning

You don’t always need a calendar for this. Sometimes your carpet just tells you.

Stains that won’t quit. You’ve hit the same spot with spray cleaner three times and it’s still there. That means it’s set deep into the fiber. Surface products aren’t going to reach it.

Smells that keep coming back. You vacuum, it smells fine for a day, then it’s back. That’s something trapped in the padding — usually pet-related, sometimes food or moisture. Our stain removal and deodorizing treatments go after the source, not just the surface.

The carpet looks flat or dull. High-traffic areas in hallways and living rooms lose their color and texture over time. That’s months of dirt pressing the fibers down. A deep clean brings them back to life.

Your allergies are acting up indoors. If you’re sneezing inside — even when it’s not pollen season — your carpet could be holding onto dust and dander.

You can’t remember the last time it was cleaned. If you have to think about it, it’s time.

The Best Time of Year to Deep Clean Carpets in Chicago

Timing matters more here than in most cities. Chicago’s seasons are extreme, and they each do different things to your floors.

Spring — April into May. This is the best window. Your carpets just survived five months of boots, salt, slush, and wet dog paws. All that grime is sitting in the fibers now. A spring deep clean clears it out and resets everything. We see a ton of appointments from Lincoln Park, Logan Square, and Lakeview this time of year — neighborhoods with lots of foot traffic and old apartment buildings where carpets really hold onto winter.

Fall — September and October. Second-best time. You’re clearing out what summer left behind — pollen, dust, all the extra dirt from having the windows open and kids in and out all day. And if you’re hosting for the holidays, this is when you want your place looking sharp.

March. Right after the worst of winter. Not everyone does a clean this early, but if your carpets took a beating from January and February, a March reset can make a big difference before spring kicks in.

Summer. Optional, but worth considering for pet owners. Dogs are outside more. They bring more in. A midsummer clean keeps things from building up.

Deep Cleaning vs. Regular Vacuuming — What’s the Difference?

We get this question a lot. Here’s the simplest way to think about it.

Vacuuming handles the surface. Crumbs, dust, hair. It’s daily maintenance. You should be doing it once a week at minimum.

Deep cleaning handles everything below that. Embedded dirt, allergens, bacteria — the stuff you can’t see but your nose and your lungs can feel. It gets down into the carpet padding and pulls out what’s been building up for months. It also brings the texture and color back in a way vacuuming never will. If you want to see the difference firsthand, take a look at our deep carpet cleaning in Chicago service. We’ve done a lot of before-and-afters that speak for themselves.

Here’s how we explain it to customers: vacuuming is brushing your teeth. Deep cleaning is going to the dentist. You need both, and one doesn’t replace the other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just rent a machine and do it myself?

You can try. But rental machines don’t have the suction power that professional equipment has. They leave more water in the carpet, and that extra moisture can cause mildew — especially in a Chicago apartment where airflow isn’t great. Professional equipment gets more water out, your carpets dry faster, and the results are noticeably better.

How long until my carpet is dry after a deep cleaning?

Typically 7 to 15 hours. Fans and dehumidifiers help a lot. Chicago summers can slow it down because the humidity works against you. In winter, bumping your heat up a couple degrees helps.

Will deep cleaning get rid of pet odors?

It will. The process breaks down the bacteria that cause the smell — not just the stain you can see. For bad cases where urine has soaked through to the padding, our pet odor removal services include treatments that go that deep.

Does deep cleaning affect my carpet warranty?

The opposite. Most manufacturers require professional cleaning to keep the warranty valid. Hot water extraction — what most people call steam cleaning — is the recommended method.
